Speed Friending

Come one come all! Whether you are a brand new or a returning student, speed friending is a great way to meet new people and maybe create some long-lasting bonds!  You’ll be discussing the most important questions in life, such as your favourite movie genre, ‘pineapple on pizza; yes, or no?’ and ‘do you scrunch or fold toilet paper?’, nah, we are just kidding about that last one, well maybe... but you'll find out when you come along to make some new connections! If you love meeting new people as much as we do, you can come to as many Speed Friending sessions throughout the day as you'd like!  What to expect when you turn up you may ask? Well, come along and you will see us set up inside of the UC Refectory, the main hall in Building 1. There will be screens with questions and long rows of chairs ready. We'll provide directions throughout so no need to worry about not knowing where to go. Our lovely staff will also be around, ready to assist you at all times. The event is accessible through flat ground from the UC Concourse or elevators behind Mizzuna café. All you need to do is sit, bring your cheerful personality and be open to talking to new people, as you only get a few minutes to get to know someone before meting someone new. We also have fun prompts and an MC on a microphone to further give you more topics to discuss. Once the session is done, we will let you know, and you can continue with your newly made friends onto our next event as there is plenty going on! The Social Intensity Scale for this is 5/5 as you will be continuously talking to a range of people for approximately an hour. We are always flexible and willing to work with our students so we want to hear from you if there are any accessibility requirements that will make it easier to attend our event!

Squid Game

The Front Man invites you, yes you, to participate in Squid Game! Have you ever found yourself watching Squid Game and thinking “I could totally survive that” or “It would be so fun to try one of those challenges – just without the dying”? Then this is the perfect O-Week event for you! Put your skills to the test and complete a series of challenges, both mental and physical, and see if you would actually survive Squid Game in real life.  Set up in the UC Refectory, Squid Game will have numerous challenges – some you’ll know from your childhood, others from the show and others will be a surprise. Completing the challenges successfully will reward you and losing them will have consequences… but don’t worry, if you fail a challenge you’re not eliminated and can just continue onto the next game!  Squid Game will have numerous physical challenges that may involve running (such as red light, green light), however, these games can be adapted to work for all abilities. The event can be found in the UC Refectory, the main hall in building 1. The event is accessible through flat ground from the UC Concourse or elevators behind Mizzuna café. The Social Intensity Scale is 5/5 as you will socialise with other competitors, work in teams and immerse yourself in the experience.  We are always flexible and willing to work with our students so we want to hear from you if there are any accessibility requirements that will make it easier to attend our event!

Market Day

Time for the biggest event of O-Week: the UCLifex O-Week Market Day! With stalls from UC social, academic, cultural and sporting clubs, there’s no doubt that you will be able to find your people. If none of them interest you, there will be plenty of UC teams and local organisations who will be able to help you out!  If even that doesn’t interest you, perhaps free stuff will? UCLifex, our clubs and other local organisations will be offering freebies on the day. So why wouldn’t you want to come? If you can only attend one event of O-Week, this is your one stop shops for everything UC! Market Day has a range of stalls that fill UC Refectory and line UC Concourse in the centre of campus. This event has a high volume of crowds and can be quite busy in peak times. If you would like to join us when it's quieter and less crowded, we recommend either coming at the start (from 10am) or towards the end (before 2pm). There will be lots of free goodies from businesses, internal and external from the University, that are most certainly worthwhile grabbing. All stalls are located on the same level, with access to UC Refectory through the elevators behind Mizzuna café. The Social Intensity Scale for this is 5/5 as you will be continuously interacting with various attendees and stallholders, with large crowds, loud music and loud chatter often around. We are always flexible and willing to work with our students so we want to hear from you if there are any accessibility requirements that will make it easier to attend our event!

Pub Choir - Average at Best Tour

Do you have the best singing voice in the world? Unlikely. But do you have the WORST singing voice in the world? EQUALLY UNLIKELY. Your voice is probably average (at best), and at Pub Choir: we think that’s great! Now in it’s 8th year, Pub Choir is the easiest, funniest, largest music lesson in the world. Created and led by the human rubber band Astrid, be snapped into shape and flicked by her quick humour as she teaches everybody how to make a BRAND NEW PIECE OF ART TOGETHER.What will happen at the show? An entirely improvised, comedy music lesson, where you are the main attraction. Astrid will teach you one song (yep, just the one) in 3-part harmony, and you will do your best to follow her instructions and not to cry.Generally, you should prepare yourself to learn something new and to not be a dickhead in public. But what should you specifically prepare? Nothing. It’s not that kind of choir. There’ll be no auditions and no homework. Just bring your mouth and we’ll do the rest.So come and bring your average-at-best self, and your average-at-best friends, and let’s try to worry less and feel better. Also worth mentioning, Astrid wrote a book, and it’s called Average At Best and signed copies will be available for pre-order purchase with Pub Choir tickets, to be collected at the show. Vocal health depending, Astrid plans to sit at the merch desk and sign these books after every show until her audience grows tired of her.
